3.10 Finishing

Preparation (sand through the grits with the grain, raise the grain, sand again, remove dust), staining, filling (grain filler for open-grained timber; wood filler for imperfections, 2024 MC1), oils (Danish, tung, decking), finishes: oil-based (polyurethane, varnish: durable, amber, slow, flammable) and water-based (fast, clear, low odour; can raise the grain and alter the texture, 2023 MC10), shellac (dissolved in methylated spirits = French polish, fast drying, 2021 MC9, 2022 MC9), spray finishes (lacquers, 2-pack; spray booth with extraction). Environmental issues: VOC emissions, solvent disposal, oily-rag fires, overspray; use water-based/low-VOC, filtered booths, approved waste disposal.
